Progress reports did go out today for all who were here after lunch! These reports do not include tests taken today, however. Please check with your student to get the report. Kindly review it and sign and return one copy on Tuesday. Thank you!
For Galileo, I will be sending home login names and passwords with students on Tuesday. Look for instructions for logging in and accessing your student's data (from the pretest last week) in Tuesday's newsletter.
Have a great Labor Day weekend!

Update and Homework 8/30/12
Reminder: Tomorrow is Picture Day. We just got word that students may "dress up" (wear a nice non-uniform outfit) for their pictures or have their pictures taken in school uniform. Remember to send in your order with money (or the receipt or order number if you paid online) if you wish to purchase a set of pictures. The order form tells what background and pose you want.
Progress reports: These reports will be sent out on Tuesday, Sept. 4., to allow tests through tomorrow (including the spelling test) to be reflected on them.
Remember that Monday, September 3, is the Labor Day holiday and there is no school.

Scholastic Book Ordering
Hello, Parents,
We had a great first week and I think we're really ready to dive into our 3rd grade curriculum. As I mentioned before, homework for this week was light. It will be more substantial starting next week, though it should not take more than about an hour.
Reading will continue to be a regular assignment for homework. I do have a nice-sized library in our class, but we also participate with Scholastic Book Clubs, where students can find reasonably priced books to really get excited about. This month we have a fantastic set of book catalogs to order from, which students took home today. Orders are due next Friday, August 17.
Scholastic really likes parents to order online, so this year they are offering a certificate for a free book for students whose parents order online. Books are delivered directly to our classroom with the regular order. You can set up online ordering at:
https://orders.scholastic.com/GK4VC
Our class code is GK4VC.
Have a wonderful weekend!

The heat is wearing on all of us and is predicted to continue for some time. In order to head off any heat related problems, we are:
- Having recess inside in the airconditioning (in the gym when possible) and
- Transportation is providing cold (or frozen) water for bus riders, to help them stay cool and hydrated on the bus

Homework 8/8/12
Another great day, getting into the groove. Again not much homework tonight. (It will be another story next week! :)
Parents, please be sure to let me know when there is a change in the usual transportation arrangements for after school. I do want to make sure that all students get where they are supposed to go!

First day update and homework
Our class is off to an outstanding start! I was pleased that everyone was able to make it on the first day. We got a lot of organization done, and had enough time to check out books so that everyone can do their homework tonight!
Homework:
Some reminders for tomorrow, though:
Homework:
- Reading: Read for 15 minutes
Some reminders for tomorrow, though:
- Tomorrow is early release (12:15 pm)
- As always, it is "$1 for Duds" day-- students may pay a dollar and "dress down" (in appropriate regular clothes rather than the uniform). Students who do not pay $1 simply wear the regular uniform. This is actually a fund-raiser to help pay for extras for our classroom.
- Lunch will not be served during school time. Students who stay for aftercare will be able to get lunch.
- We will have a morning recess, so send a snack with your student for recess time, especially if they will not be staying for lunch.
- Please remember to review and sign your student's homework folder tonight. I will check them in the morning.

Welcome Back!
It’s great to be starting another school year! It is hard to believe the summer is really gone. I am looking forward to meeting a new class of students and having a wonderful year of learning.
Our “Meet the Teacher” evening is Thursday, August 2 at 6:00 pm at the school. This is an opportunity to meet me and pick up more information specific to our class. You will also be able to get more information on other programs and activities available at Heritage Elementary School, such as transportation, lunch program, clubs, and sports. Don’t miss it!
For ongoing communication, check back here regularly. I usually post updates, homework, spelling lists, etc. You can also email me at dshrader@hesglendale.org or call me at the school number, (623) 742-3956 Ext 121. If I am not able to take the call at the time, I have voice mail, and usually return emails and calls by the end of the day.
Hoping to see you on Thursday evening!
Ms. Shrader
