Update 8/19/11

Wow, what a great finish to our first full week.  Our class seems to be getting into the swing of the procedures and how the day works.  Mr. Thies stopped by and was really impressed with how excellent our class was! He drew the ticket for the prize drawing, which Erin won.  Congratulations, Erin!

There is no homework tonight - and there will usually be no homework on Friday.  Parents, please remember to check your student's homework folder for homework that is due and sign that you have checked.  This way you can help your child to make sure he or she is keeping up in class.  You do not need to sign tonight, as there is nothing tonight for homework.

On another note - if you drop your child off in the morning at school, please form 2 lines (inside and outside) on the curved street near the office.  Leave a middle lane open. Please wait to let your student(s) out until you are by the sidewalk area near the office.  Dropping them off before that area creates a dangerous situation for the students. Also, please do not park your car in the drop-off area.  If you will be walking with your child to before-care or the office or class, please park in the parking lot, so that traffic can move smoothly. This same procedure applies for picking up students in the afternoon. Thank you!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Homework 8/16/11

We had a lot of fun at the NED Show this morning! Ned showed us how to Never give up, Encourage others, and always Do your best. Yo-yos like the ones shown will be available here at the school for the next week for those who want to buy one.  Students took home flyers yesterday with the price list. They can use cash or a check to Heritage to purchase a yo-yo at lunchtime.

A reminder that tomorrow is an early release day.  We will dismiss at 12:15 pm.  It is also "Dollar for Duds" -- your student may dress down (appropriate school dress) if they bring a dollar tomorrow!

Homework for tonight:
  • Math: Worksheet P3 (Addition strategies with order and zeros)
  • Reading:  Read for 15 minutes
That's all!

News and Homework 8/15/11

We're off to another great start to the week!  Today, students are bringing home some information on 2 events at our school.  The first is the Ned Show, which is an inspiring and fun encouraging word for our age group.  If your child was here last year, you probably heard about Ned and his yo-yos.  The yo-yos will be available for purchase, but there is no obligation.  The form sent home today tells you how to order.

The second event is our first fund-raiser. We are raising funds for new playground equipment by selling the coupon books.  Each book is $20, but contains over $3,000 in savings! A book, order form, and information sheet was sent home with each student.  The coupon book is for preview only and needs to be returned to the school unless you buy it.  Students who sell 5 coupon books will get the coupon book free! Please see the information sheet for details.

This week we are working on DIBELS and handwriting skills.  We will not have a spelling list (or test) until later (beginning the week of Aug. 29). However, we do have homework!

Homework for 8/15/11
  • Math: Worksheet P2 (Using doubles strategies to find sums)
  • Reading:  Read for 15 minutes
  • Remember that book orders are due Friday!
That's all!

Update and Homework for 8/11/11

Well, it has been an exciting first couple of days here for the new 2011-2012 school year! We have been getting to know each other, doing some assessments, and learning how the routine works.  This class is a really awesome group of students!  It looks like it will be a great year.

Yesterday we had some homework, though I did not get a chance to post it.  It was just to read for 15 minutes and to let parents know that the deadline for ordering books (Scholastic Book Clubs - I distributed a catalog) was next Friday, August 19.  (I will also be sending home a letter tomorrow with our class code, so that parents who wish to order online -- and earn the class a free book -- can do that.)

Remember, parents, that you are to sign the homework sheet and your student is to bring the homework folder back to school the next day.  I check planners first thing in the morning.

Homework for tonight:
Reading:  Read for 15 minutes
Notes:  Do Homework Plan (Students received a sheet with some questions to answer to help them plan a homework routine.  It does require them to work with parents to set up the routine.  Each student should bring back the plan tomorrow, and I will copy them and return the original, so they can follow their plan.)

That's all!
